Ben Hovland
Senior CounselBen Hovland is a senior attorney with the Fair Elections Legal Network. Mr. Hovland’s work with voting rights and election administration focuses on improving access to registration and voting. He has given trainings, webinars, and interviews on issues ranging from legislative analysis and voter suppression efforts to improving voter engagement and participation with technological advancements.
Mr. Hovland previously served as the Deputy General Counsel for the Missouri Secretary of State's office. In that role, he focused on legal issues related to the administration of state and federal elections including recounts, poll worker training, voter registration list maintenance, statewide database matching, voter education resources, and ballot initiative litigation.
While in law school, Mr. Hovland served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Ann Aiken of the United States District Court for the District of Oregon and the Oregon Tax Court. Additionally, he served on the Oregon Law Review and published Championed by Progressives and William U’Ren: Can Oregon Give the Ballot Initiative to the People Again? 85 Or. L. Rev. 275 (2006).
In addition to his legal experience, Mr. Hovland has worked for several statewide political campaigns. Mr. Hovland obtained a J.D. from University of Oregon School of Law. He is a member of the Missouri Bar.
