How to Fight Back

From legislative advocacy to exciting new ballot initiatives, the message is clear: voters do not support efforts to chip away at laws that expand access and convenience to the ballot box. Take a look at these examples.

Proactive Electoral Reforms
Over the past decade, advances in electoral administration have sought to meet the needs of an increasingly mobile and technologically dependent society. Innovations such as online voter registration, Election Day registration, Election Day address updates, no excuse absentee voting, and early voting recognize that previous models of election administration are outdated. Statewide registration databases and related technological innovations now make it possible for elections officials to pursue policies that expand voter access without jeopardizing election security.
To truly counter voter suppression efforts, take back the debate by developing an agenda that promotes positive electoral reforms.

On the defense: Legislative Advocacy
Whether it’s new restrictions on community voter registration drives or a new strict photo ID bill, chances are you’ve found your way here because there’s a War on Voting being waged in your state. At Fair Elections Legal Network, we’ve worked with legislators and community advocates to fight back against voter suppression bills around the country. Check out our Voting Rights Resources for talking points, fact sheets, analyses, and written testimony. Don’t see what you need? Contact us.

Stuck with a bad bill? Repeal it!
In November 2011, Maine voters used a citizen’s veto process to save Election Day Registration from the chopping block. Ohioans have blocked implementation of an omnibus voter suppression bill by getting the question of its repeal placed on the ballot for voters in 2012. In Tennessee, a coalition of groups is calling upon the state legislature to repeal a new photo ID bill.
Repeal strategies are useful even when victory isn’t a foregone conclusion. Get creative!
